Excited pupils at Beech Hall school are enjoying the Good Life by welcoming chickens into their daily routines as part of an entrepreneurial programme at the school.
A chicken coop has been erected at the Tytherington-based school ready for the feathered friends to make it their home. Committed pupils AKA the Chicken Committee, will take care of and raise the chickens at the school and the eggs will be sold to the public to raise money for the continued care and upkeep of the hens.
The idea came from new pupil Harry Lyons, (14), who during his joining interview at Beech Hall School told Headmaster, James Allen, that in his spare time he loved to keep chickens. Harry is an avid breeder with over 60 to his name and sells the eggs and chicks online to generate extra pocket money.
Mr Allen commented: “The idea behind this scheme is that the children will learn to look after them and sell the eggs, thereby nurturing valuable business skills. This will be a great project for the pupils they are all excited to get involved and we have even created a Chicken Committee, and each pupil will get a badge to show their status as part of the group.”
The eggs will be sold in personalised boxes designed by one of the children’s parents, Lydia Causer who has a design agency Thrust Creative.

Harry will be on hand to impart his wisdom and knowledge to the younger members of the school. He said: “It is exciting that Mr Allen saw my passion and decided to develop it to benefit the whole school.”
